1. What's the plan?
1. What's the plan? The plan is simple: to try and raise $1m (US) for charity
and $1m for us by selling 2,000,000 pixels for $1 each. So, everyone is welcome to buy our pixels, which are available in 100-pixel 'blocks' (each measuring 10x10 pixels). You will see the homepage is divided into 20,000 of these 100-pixel blocks (hence there are 2,000,000 pixels in total). The reason for selling them in 100-pixel blocks is because anything smaller would be too small to display anything meaningful. You can buy as many pixels as you like, as long as there are some available (see the live stats in the top right corner of the page). When you buy some pixels, you can then display an image/ad/logo of your choice in the space you have purchased. You can also have the image click through to your own website. However, no obscene or offensive images are allowed. The pixels you buy will be displayed on the homepage permanently. The homepage will not change. Using some of the money we make from the site, we guarantee to keep it online for at least 5 years, but hopefully much longer. We want this site to change your ideas about advertising and offer the possibility of feeling good about the money you spend. So, in the long run, we believe the pixels will offer good value. 2. Who are you? We are Josh Bessom (32) and Jane Lynch (27). We live in Huntington Beach, California. We are two working class people with passion to change the world and the usual debts to pay off. We are not a corporation nor are we professional web designers. We are doing this to see if we can start a new way of advertising that leaves you feeling good about the money you spent. 3. Is this a joke? We are completely genuine. Although this site may be funny & even
fun- it’s no joke! We honestly just wanted to give it a shot. We
are really selling pixels for $1 each because we want to raise one million
dollars for charity and one million for us. 4. How did you come up with the idea? The idea for pixel advertising was the product of Alex Tew’s struggling student imagination, and it’s brilliant! He started www.milliondollarhomepage.com to pay for college. His site has received a lot of traffic and he’s generated a huge interest in pixel advertising. He’s been in the press and many know about him. There are many copy-cat sites out there but none that have taken it a step further. That’s where our idea came in: pixel advertising to raise money for charity! It’s a win/win situation. The advertisers will have long-term ads displayed online, everyone who sees your ad will know you donated half of the cost to charity, and we will get something too. It’s something to feel good about and it’s good for your business. 5. What will you do with the money? Half of every dollar made on this site goes to charity.
Hopefully, it will be $1m going to the various charities that the advertisers
choose. Hopefully, the advertisers will choose charities that are involved
in important issues and are working towards bettering the world for all
of us!
6. Why should I buy your pixels? We feel that buying our pixels will make you feel good!
Seriously, when half of the money you spend on advertising on our site
goes to a good cause it’s a win/win situation. You will feel good
about it and your consumers will feel good about you and spending their
time and money on you. You can also feel good that the money that will
go to us is just going to two honest people - not some corrupt corporation
where you don’t know what they will do with your money. Of course
none of our advertisers are the aforementioned "corrupt
corporations". 7. Why can't I buy one single pixel? We sell our pixels in 10x10 blocks because anything smaller would be too small to display anything meaningful. If you really want to own a single pixel, there is always the option of getting your friends to pitch in for a 10x10 block. 8. How long will the site be online? The site will be online for at least 5 years (from Oct. 11, 2005) but the aim is to keep the site online forever. 9. How do I know my money went to the charity I chose? We will send you proof via email. We will forward you a confirmation receipt from the charity. If no confirmation e-mail is provided, we'll send you a screen shot. 10. How is this site better than the other 80 bazillion pixel ad sites? We feel that this site is better because half of all the money is going to charities that can use this money for a variety of good causes. It is a direct and effective way to help. As we have learned from recent world events, people do care about each other and they have the desire to help at a grass roots level without all the red tape & big business expenses. This site is creating a way to put your advertising dollars towards something great. We want to change the way society advertises and promote conscious spending. It’s a simple idea: knowing where your dollars go and feeling good about it! It’s good karma. WHAT CHARITIES DO YOU DONATE TO, CAN I PICK MY OWN? Of course you can pick your own charity! We would prefer that you pick one of ours, as they are working on VERY important issues: ONE
- The Campaign to Make Poverty History : N.O.R.M.L - The National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws : Since its founding in 1970, NORML has provided a voice in the public policy debate for those Americans who oppose marijuana prohibition and favor an end to the practice of arresting marijuana smokers. A nonprofit public-interest advocacy group, NORML represents the interests of the tens of millions of Americans who smoke marijuana responsibly. P.E.T.A - People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals : People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 850,000 members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world. Founded in 1980, PETA is dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. Oxfam International is a confederation of 12 organizations working together with over 3,000 partners in more than 100 countries to find lasting solutions to poverty, suffering and injustice. With many of the causes of poverty global in nature, the 12 affiliate members of Oxfam International believe they can achieve greater impact through their collective efforts. Oxfam International seeks increased worldwide public understanding that economic and social justice are crucial to sustainable development. We strive to be a global campaigning force promoting the awareness and motivation that comes with global citizenship whilst seeking to shift public opinion in order to make equity the same priority as economic growth. VotersUnite! is a national non-partisan organization dedicated to fair and accurate elections. It focuses on distributing well-researched information to elections officials, elected officials, the media, and the public; as well as providing activists with information they need to work toward transparent elections in their communities. The right to have one’s vote counted properly is a cornerstone of our democratic system. Making sure that our election systems are reliable and publicly verifiable enfranchises voters and increases public confidence and participation in our political process. The National Election Data Archive Project plans to create a nation-wide database of detailed election results, voter registration information, and demographic data, to be publicly available and analyzed by our project team's mathematicians and statisticians, as well as by our independent outside peer-review board. Our goal is to use the data to develop and test mathematical techniques to detect irregular vote counts worthy of investigation. If the project is successful, it will provide a mathematical method of detecting significant errors in vote counting for all candidates. This project may also be able to detect patterns of fraud or errors in electronic voting systems that do not provide a voter-verifiable paper record of the ballot. BuzzFlash provides headlines, news, and commentary for a geographically-diverse, politically-savvy, pro-democracy, anti-hypocrisy web community, reaching five million people a month and growing. |
